HISTORIC BUILDINGS AND ARCHITECTURAL MONUMENTS

Problems

In order to protect historic buildings, significant architectural monuments and protecting copyrights of their expression, it is required to maintain the character of the facade and existing architectural design.

External insulation by standard thermal insulation systems of thermal insulation boards is unacceptable in case of the above constructions due to the plasticity of their facade and the heritage conservation requirements. Internal insulation is possible to some extent but limited by many requirements. Even the choice of a partial internal insulation is affected by problems with non-identifiable material base with a construction, plastic ornaments and only limited increase in thermal resistance due to the danger of frost penetrating through walls in greater depth up to the disintegration and plaster falling off and an increase in humidity in the masonry due to the lack of a temperature gradient. The internal insulation moves the dew point temperature to the interior which negatively affects a year-round balance of the amount of condensed and vaporized humidity of masonry. With improper insulation, this method leads to the freezing of walls to a greater depth and to the dew point (condensing zone) shift into the interior with a degradation of both material and ambient hygiene.

Current construction material bases offers the possibility of significant, double, triple, even multiple increase in the thermal resistance of the outer walls even in these cases. It provides the possibility of visually virtually unrecognizable exterior insulation of plastic facades with bossage, cordon cornices and reliefs as well as areas with a number of rocailles and ornaments on the inside of older buildings using the water-dilutable mineral coatings with exceptional thermal insulation and protective properties not only for the walls but also the original plaster surfaces. This protection, which is also suitable for demanding environments with acid rain, is able to copy irregularities of the original surface treatment techniques. The actual solution, depending on the requirements at the recommended thickness, standardly corresponds at the level of 0.8 mm to 2.0 mm.

Solution

After completing the restoration, reconstruction, basic construction and necessary waterproofing work, treat the facade with depth, water-dilutable penetration, apply the mineral ADITIZOL OPEN paint of 0.8 mm to 2.0 mm according to specific requirements, including the application to window and door jambs (reveals). ADITIZOL OPEN paint can be colour-pigmented in the desired shade in the topcoat or water-dilutable facade paint can be applied on its last layer. The paint – coat of paint is water-dilutable, suitable for both interior and exterior.

It is possible, based on structural and physical recommended determination of the thickness and type of paint, to use the paint on interior walls and ceilings which, if necessary, should be appropriately treated. Then, the high-diffusion open ADITIZOL OPEN paint or the closing ADITIZOL BASIC paint of 0.8 mm to 1.6 mm thickness is applied according to specific requirements. It is possible to coat the A paints with an appropriate interior paint of any colour in the future.

Result

With its continuous, seamless membrane, mineral ADITIZOL paint adheres to any geometric shapes (reliefs, stucco, ornaments, etc.), to window and door jambs.

The paint does not prevent the diffusion (permeation) of water vapour while not allowing water through inside the external structure. However, it is also optional as diffusion closing.

The facade and all its components are insulated and protected against the harmful effects of environment – acid rain and atmospheric water cannot penetrate though walls.

Destruction of the facade and decorative reliefs is practically impossible with the above method. The peeling of facade paint due to its high vapour permeability at the level of reconstruction plasters does not occur. The facades have long-maintained appearance.

Using the material in the building exterior and interior allows you to preserve the original expression of finishes, the material identity of foundation in the contact, thus the perception of the atmosphere of all structures. It retains the unchanged volume and dimensions of living space, especially in solving the jambs of window and door structures. It improves thermal comfort in rooms, significantly reduces the potential occurrence and effects of surface condensation of water vapour and prevents frost penetration through walls. It effectively helps in solving the problems of thermal bridges and prevents subsequent formation of mould. It does not create typical hard crusts and can be gently removed by conventional mechanical means if necessary.

The most important properties predetermining the use of this mineral, water-dilutable, standardly white paint but possible to be coloured by mineral pigments in the final coat of paint (coating) in external and internal surfaces are:

the thermal insulation capacity guaranteeing even more than double the thermal resistance of the original, standardly coarse masonry of perimeter wall on the basis of full burnt brick or mixed masonry in the surface coat of paint of required thickness from the interior and exterior

•  the high vapour permeability allowing the use not only on standard mineral facades but also on reconstruction plaster systems WTA with the required high diffusion parameters – the thickness of equivalent air layer sd (ADITIZOL OPEN) is 0.13m at a thickness of 1-mm coat of paint (coating)*

• the high adhesion to foundation and frost resistance several times exceeds the required values *

• the material complies in terms of health safety and VOC emissions for interior use*

Optional colours in the recommended range, short time of coloured or white coating treatment within a few days only with repairing the original facade or interior, with considerably reduced costs for e.g. scaffolding, is an obvious standard of the system.
